10 Steps to Better Media Coverage for Your Association


Association executive Edward Segal, CAE, wrote today's guest post. He is CEO of the Marin Association of Realtors and the author of several exceptional books on public relations.
Associations face two important challenges in generating the publicity they want. First, it's impossible to know what stories every reporter, editor, or blogger is working on or may be planning. Second, if journalists don't know your organization exists, they'll never think to contact you for quotes or information for their stories.
Your association can quickly overcome these hurdles by becoming a resource to as many news outlets as possible. Here are 10 steps to help make that happen:
1.   Take stock and cast a wide net. Make a list of all the topics and issues in which your organization has knowledge, expertise, or information. With this list in hand, identify the news organizations, as well as Websites and blogs, that follow or might have an interest in these matters. To ensure you haven't missed anyone, conduct a search of relevant keywords and phrases in Google's Web, blog, and news categories.
2.    Initiate contact. Send emails to appropriate contacts at these outlets to tell them about the topics and issues in which your organization has expertise. Explain that your association wants to be a resource for their stories in these areas, and ask how you can be of help in upcoming articles.
3.    Stay in touch. Reach out to these reporters on a regular basis. By staying on their radar, journalists are more likely to think of you when they need you. But don't become a pest.
4.    Alert yourself. Set up Google Alert for the topics and issues for which you'd like to generate additional publicity for your organization. Evaluate the results and, as appropriate, contact the editors, reporters, and bloggers to offer your organization as a resource on future stories. If you contact them quickly enough and have something to contribute, they might include you in updates to those stories.
5.    Cast an even wider net. Join one or more online services that provide subscribers with inquiries from journalists, or help link experts with reporters. These sites include Help a Reporter Out, Muck Rack, PR Newswire's ProfNet, The Yearbook of Experts, and Radio-TV Interview Report.
6.    Don't wait. Respond immediately to all media inquiries. Whether reporters are on deadline or not, the sooner you get back to them, the more likely it is that you will have an opportunity to be a resource. Given the competition organizations face for publicity and the deadlines under which reporters work, the expiration dates of these opportunities may be very short.  
7.    Give good quotes. Journalists can be inclined to interview people who have demonstrated that they can give good quotes. When reporters see you've been interviewed by other news organizations, they may seek to contact you for interviews for their own stories. Consider your sound bites to be auditions that can lead to additional publicity opportunities.  
8.   Get a room. Establish a "press room" page on your Website. Make it as easy as possible for visiting journalists and bloggers to immediately see your association's areas of knowledge and expertise and how to contact designated spokespeople. Keep press materials current and ensure that links to news stories where your organization is mentioned are working.
9.    Plan ahead. News organizations may post editorial calendars on their Websites, or will be glad to send them to you on request. The calendars can be an early warning system about future stories: armed with this advance notice, you might be able to position your organization as a resource to the reporter or editor and wind up with more coverage for your association.
10.  Be patient. Providing journalists with whom you've had no prior dealings with tips and information for their stories can be an investment in time and resources. Sometimes the payoff will be immediate, such as a quote, attribution, or profile. At other times, your efforts may take some time to bear fruit. But if you don't try, the payoff will be zero.

Marketing Spend Increases


Marketers are spending more, according to research firm Warc.

The company's Global Marketing Index, which tracks monthly trends in spending, staffing and trading, has climbed for three consecutive months, and stands at its highest point since last April.

The climb is due to ever-greater spending on mobile and digital marketing.

Spending on TV and radio is shrinking.

Marketers in the Americas exhibited the greatest confidence, followed by Asia Pacific and Europe.

Warc's Global Marketing Index is based on a survey of 1,225 marketing executives.

Think Billboard


Want to know if a new-product idea is any good?
Create an ad for it. 
Or, better yet, a billboard.
That's how Apple rose "from flame to fame" in the late '90s.
Using journal entries and agency memos, California adman Rob Siltanen constructs an account of the birth of Apple's legendary "Think different" campaign in Branding Strategy Insider.
On a July afternoon in 1997, in a cluttered conference room inside Siltanen's agency, the campaign began life as a series of billboards. 
They looked just like the ads that would eventually appear on TV and in newspapers and magazines nationwide a few months later.
The idea for the campaign paired two sources: an IBM ad campaign running at the time ("Think IBM") and Ralph Waldo Emerson's chestnut, “To be a genius is to be misunderstood."
No sooner had "Think Different" launched than "Apple became the talk of the town," Siltanen recalls. 
The ads pushed consumers "to suddenly think about the brand in a whole new way."
Within 12 months, Apple rolled out the multicolored iMac and the company's stock price shot up 300 percent.

Ready for the Content Arms Race?

B2B marketers be warned!

We stand at the threshold of a "Content Arms Race," says Doug Kessler, creative director for Velocity, on Hubspot's Inbound Marketing Blog.

He compares the state of content marketing today to that of TV advertising in the 1950s.

"The first companies to jump into this exciting new medium discovered something big," he writes. "They discovered that they could use TV ads to build something called brands."

But it wasn't long before TV's pioneers were swamped by sodbusters, and TV advertising lost its luster.

"We’re in a similar place right now," Kessler writes. The window is shutting on opportunities to become content-marketing pioneers ("Those guys who put out that great stuff”).

Marketers instead are entering a Content Arms Race in which "every marketing discipline is becoming content-powered. 

"In the content marketplace, you’re not just up against your direct competitors," Kessler says. "You’re up against everyone who’s producing content on the same issues. You’re competing against all of these in an epic battle for the scarcest resource on Earth: people’s attention."

What's the fallout?

"When the deluge hits," Kessler says, "all this content is going to start to look a hell of a lot like something we’ve all become really, really good at ignoring. It’s going to look like advertising."

Want Followers? Go Native.

Inc. wants advertisers to go native.

So-called "native advertising" is marketing content that's camouflaged.

Inc. believes we'll hear a lot more about native advertising in the months to come.

A native ad looks and feels like 'the format, style, and voice of whatever platform it appears in," Inc. says. It blends into the landscape so well visitors see it as part of the platform.

As a result, a native ad is better readand responded tothan a display ad.

But native advertising isn't easy, Inc. warns.

You need a steady stream of platform-tailored content.

Fortunately, "The content in question does not have to be slick to be effective," Inc. notes.

Marketers should let go their obsession with eye-pleasing imagery and focus instead on boldness, the magazine says.

You're Producing Your Own Video. What's the Point?

First, to power up your video, ask yourself, what’s the point?
 
What are you trying to accomplish and why?

Second, ask yourself how your product or service benefits your target audience.

And show it!

Best yet, show real people who have benefited from what you have to offer.

Third, have them tell their stories in their own words. 

Authenticity is key and that’s a great way to convince your audience of the benefit of what you have to offer.

Fourth, shorter is better. 

Fifth, if you spent all those years gaining vital experience to excel at what you do, why do you think you can just do the video yourself? 

Sorry about that, but hire a pro. 

It will make all the difference. 

And that’s the whole point, right?

Don't Make These 4 Deadly Video Mistakes


Writing for Intuit’s Small Business Blog, videomaker C.J. Bruce warns marketers of four deadly Web video mistakes.
 
Not producing a video. "Using video for your business is no longer optional," Bruce writes. The availability of prosumer gear removes the age-old excuse "video is too expensive."
 
Producing a video. One video "isn't a content strategy," Bruce says. "After all, you wouldn’t send just one email, put up just one blog post, or have a TV commercial air just once." Bruce suggests producing a series of videos and releasing them weekly through the span of a quarter.
 
Believing you'll go viral. The chances your video will go viral are slim. "You need to have a plan for your videos that includes marketing them with social media and SEO tactics," Bruce says. Be sure to put your videos on your Website and send the link to your email list. Also consider placing ads on Google.
 
Counting views. Engagement is more important than viewership. Put in place systems to track YouTube likes, shares, comments and viewing times after your video goes live.

You Say You Want a Revolution?

It's called NFC.
 
It will change the way attendees discover content at events.

NFC (the acronym for "Near Field Communication") is a form of short-range wireless that bridges the gap between the real and virtual worlds.

The technology allows anyone with an NFC-ready mobile phone or tablet to access content by touching the device to a comparable one—or to a "smart poster."

Thanks to the manufacturers, nearly one-third of new phones are NFC-ready right now. Two years hence, all will be.

With NFC, attendees will be able to touch salespeople's phones and instantly download anything now delivered on line. Videos. PowerPoint slides. Flyers. White papers. Discount coupons. You name it.

Salespeople not around? No worries. Attendees can do the same thing by touching a smart poster.

But wait, there's more.
 
Provided the nearest cash register is NFC-ready, attendees will be able to pay for purchases with a touch of their phones.

The revolution NFC will usher in isn't pie in the sky.

It's underway as we speak.

B2B Marketers: Attract Big Dogs with Web Video


They gripe when employees do it.
But 73% of C-level executives watch Web videos during the workday, says MagnetVideo's David Rose.
That's big news for marketers.
Web videos work especially well when you want to draw the top dogs to your booth at a tradeshow, according to Rose.
One of his clients, QuantiSense, used a Web video to boost traffic at the National Retail Federation's Annual Expo.
Traffic increased 218%.
Before the show, QuantiSense shot a one-minute video and built a show-specific landing page to house it. The firm then blasted promotional emails to prospective attendees, and shared links to the landing page on social media outposts. The firm also posted the video on YouTube, grabbing organic Google search traffic by including the term "NRF 2012" in the video's title, description, tags and closed captioning.
During the show, the firm placed a 60-foot high banner outside the entrance to the exhibit hall. The banner featured a QR code that, when snapped, automatically launched the video. QuantiSense also played the video on large monitors inside its booth.
After the show, QuantiSense blasted followup emails to all visitors that included a link to the landing page. There was no escaping that video!

Starbucks' "Newsjacking" Attempt Falls Off the Cliff

Starbuck's attempt to "newsjack" deficit negotiations has fallen off its own cliff.

Last week, CEO Howard Shultz asked the employees at 125 Washington, DC-area stores to scribble the phrase "Come Together" on the paper cups they hand customers. 

But employees aren't cooperating.

I asked three of them why.

"We're too busy," one said.

"We can't remember to do it," said another.

"It's pretty stupid," said the third.

Lesson learned: There's many a slip between the cup and the lip. 

If you want to newsjack successfully, first get your employees on board.

With Web Videos, Short Trumps Long

Short Web videos are more effective than long ones, according to a new study by AOL.

The study found:
  • For brand recall, short beat long by 25 percent
  • For creating purchase intent, short beat long by 42 percent
Although viewers understand that ads are the cost of free Web content, they're adopting the same ad-avoidance habits TV watchers have (changing channels, multitasking, leaving the room, etc.).

To counteract those habits, the study says, you should produce short Web videos that include coupons, contests and links.

B2B Execs Socially Unaware


B2B executives don’t get social media, according to marketer Lenna Garibia, writing for MarketingProfs.

Citing new research by Harris Interactive, she notes:
  • 43% say they rarely or never consider the social media reputation of their firms when making key decisions
  • 67% say they could not respond to a hostile social-media post within a day, and
  • 13% say they wouldn’t bother
There’s a weird geographic difference among the execs.

Those who live in the northeast are much more likely to care about the social media reputation of their firms than those who live in the west.

Going Broke? Maybe Your Website's Broken.


Research firm Forrester asked 5,200 customers what they do when a Website fails them.

According to the study, Websites That Don’t Support Customers Waste Millions, they:
  • Pick up the phone. 35% call when your Website lets them down.
  • Take their business elsewhere. 17% move to a competitor. 
  • Give up. 17% abandon their purchase.
Forrester also gauged the cost of broken Websites and concluded:
  • Large e-retailers are losing $47 million in direct income every year.
  • Large e-retailers are adding $47 million to their cost of sales every year.
For 14 years, Forrester has been evaluating B2C and B2B Websites. 

It estimates that only 3% aren't broken.

To learn if yours is broken, Forrester recommends you ask. "The only way to know whether a site visit was a success is to ask the customers," the report states. 

Ask visitors three simple questions:
  • What did you come to the site to do today?
  • Were you able to accomplish that goal?
  • If not, why not?

More on Mobile-Friendly Websites

"Is your Website changing with the mobile revolution, or is it remaining stagnant?" asks online marketer Sarah Tharp, writing for Biznology.

An unfriendly site costs your business dearly, Tharp insists.
 
"I cannot begin to tell you the number of times I’ve attempted to access a Website online, and because of glaring functionality and usability issues, have gone back to the search results and given my business to a competitor site," Tharp writes.
 
What's fundamental to a mobile-friendly site?
  • Fast page-loading
  • Navigation with tabs to information most needed by mobile users
  • Pages that require little or no scrolling
  • Large buttons that can be easily pressed
  • An easily accessible search bar
  • A phone number with a “click to call” option
  • An address that can be clicked to automatically present directions
At a minimum, every business should know how its Website appears on mobile devices and how mobile users are experiencing it, Tharp says.

Time to Quit Facebook?


Copyblogger's Sonia Simone thinks content marketers should quit Facebook.

Because you can't control what social platforms like Facebook do, she says, it's risky to build your business on another company's "virtual land."

"The minute you actually depend on Facebook for your business, they will change their terms of service in a way that causes you pain," Simone writes.

Publishing on social platforms like Facebook benefits the platforms' owners, nothing more.

They goad you to post content so you'll win a bunch of "Likes."

But that's only a ruse.

In reality, according to Simone, your publishing efforts "are helping them build an audience they can show their spammy display ads to."

Worse yet, Facebook isn't about selling.

"People go to Facebook to share duckface selfies, pictures of grandkids, and memes from George Takei," Simone says.

And while it's still possible to engage people with your Facebook posts, "'engagement' does not equal 'customers.'"

You Facebook posts will get Likes that never lead to sales.

"That’s not marketing," Simone says. "It’s an annoying hobby."

Google+ Boosts SEO


Social media maven Courtney Kettmann, writing for Socialmouths, says that Google+, because it's owned by Google, will boost your company's search engine rankings.
"Posts and accounts will appear high in Google search results," she writes. "This is beneficial to a business, as it can help improve the SEO of a company’s Website."
The extra search-engine hits "alone make Google+ essential for a business," according to Kettman.
Google+ posts with images and videos score particularly high among visitors, she notes.

Pew Research Center says that daily use of Twitter has doubled in one year.
Andamong 18-24 year oldsTwitter use has increased four times during the past two years.
The rise of smartphones and mobile apps may account for the growth.
Smartphone users are particularly likely to use Twitter, according to Pew.

Get with YouTube.

YouTube's search engine will deliver new leads, according to Julie Perry, vice president, BLASTmedia. That's because:
  • YouTube includes your video in viewers' searches for related topics, including famous people and products.
  • Like Amazon, YouTube recommends videos whenever viewers log on. So It's easy to get in front of the ones who are interested in your products.
  • YouTube sends weekly emails to viewers who subscribe to your channel. So whenever you upload a new video, they'll find out. 

Many marketers don't realize the power or popularity of YouTube's search engine (second only to Google's), according to Perry.

"There are so many opportunities there for being discovered," she says. "It’s really the way of Web 2.0. You want to be where you can be findable if people want to discover you."

Andbecause Google owns YouTubesearch results on the leading search engine will turn up your videos on YouTube much faster than they will from anyplace else. 

Especially your Website.

5 Steps to Mobile-friendly Emails

Customers are most likely to read your emails on smartphones and tablets, according to research by Return Path.

Follow these five steps to make your emails mobile-friendly:

1. Use a one-column layout. Vertical scrolling is more natural to mobile users.

2. Use larger fonts, bigger buttons and high-contrast colors. Make it easy for readers to differentiate your email's elements.

3. Include a link in the pre-header. The link should take readers to text-only orbettermobile-optimized version of your email (essential if you want to influence Blackberry users).

4. Keep emails short. Edit ruthlessley and use attention-grabbing calls to action. Your emails will be read during brief intervals of downtime.

5. Link readers only to mobile-friendly Web pages. It's futile to send readers to a Web page that can only be read on a desktop.

Teddy Roosevelt delivered "The Right of the People to Rule" in New York's Carnegie Hall on March 20, 1912.

Six days before, The New York Times heralded the speech through an article headlined ROOSEVELT INTENDS TO MAKE THINGS HUM.

Teddy chastised his party for its "ultra-conservatism" and ended on this high note: "In order to succeed we need leaders of inspired idealism; leaders to whom are granted great visions; who dream greatly and strive to make their dreams come true; who can kindle the people with the fire from their own burning souls."
